A Perfect Year?
By Ruth Foster
1990s England. In leafy Upley Rising, Ali and Caroline become neighbours but not friends. Ali has a troubled partner, too many children and never enough money. Next door, Caroline rises seamlessly above everything life throws at her, and always gets what she wants. Then there’s respectable Robert, the third neighbour, whose humdrum life takes an unexpected turn.
Every December Ali, Caroline and Robert write up their year’s news into round robin letters for everyone they know. What a marvellous year it’s been: Charles has been promoted twice, Max is the school orchestra’s top tuba player and Clementine’s child modelling career progression is meteoric. But behind the cheery anecdotes of speed hump campaigns and stellar exam results there is a second story: of a spiralling feud between neighbours, sinister goings on at Upley Rising’s pagan summer festival, and an unsolved murder mystery.
Whose letters can you believe?
